On top of everything else happening at the Veterans Garden of Augusta, we are making this a real priority. We’re beginning the restoration of the quarter acre hillside behind the garden by removing the invasive Bermuda grass and replacing it with native wildflowers, grasses, sedges and woody plants. The goal is to bring this space back to life as healthy habitat for pollinators and birds.
We’re lucky to have guidance from the Virginia Native Plant Society, the Master Naturalists and our advisor Kadrin Anderson, along with other knowledgeable folks who are generously donating their time. Their help makes this project feel not only doable but meaningful.
For our veterans this is a chance to learn about native plants, understand the process of healing a landscape and see real change take shape over time. And imagine the garden filled with local bees, butterflies and birds once this hillside is thriving again. It will bring so much life and color into the space.
If you’re curious about the process or want to help out reach out to us. We would love to have you join in as we restore this hillside together.
Great things are growing here.
