Welcoming Rachel! Our New Garden Team Member and Food Preservation Teacher
We’re excited to welcome Rachel to the Veterans Garden of Augusta team! She’s already lending a big hand bringing her tractor to help till and prepare our new garden site for planting.
Rachel has a deep love for doing things herself from building and crafting to preserving her own food. As she shared,
“Hi, I’m Rachel. I have always had an interest in doing things myself, from building my own things, making presents from scratch, or preserving my own food. My canning journey started about 20 years ago. However, when I was younger, I didn’t feel I had enough land to grow my own garden. Little did I know, you don’t really need a lot of land. My partner, Jason, put a beautiful garden in our backyard and now I can and dehydrate our own food and spices from the veggies we grow. I’m very interested in self-sustainment and always eager to learn new things related to that.”
Rachel will be bringing that same passion and experience to our community by offering food preservation classes for veterans teaching canning, dehydrating, and eventually freeze-drying. Her workshops will help veterans learn how to extend their harvests, turning what they grow into food that nourishes throughout the year.
We’re so thankful to have Rachel and Jason as part of this growing effort. Welcome to the team!
